History of Ayr

Ayr is a town on the west coast of Scotland and lies on the mouth of the River Ayr, with a heritage and history preserved within its buildings, monuments, and gardens.

In 1197 a new castle was built between the River Ayr and the River Doon, ordered by King William the Lion.

By 1225 the town grew quickly to be the main marketplace and seaport in Ayr and surrounding towns, and by the 16th century it was a busy port exporting wool, fish, and hides.

During the 17th Century the import of French wine was Ayr´s most important trade, and their Port was one of the first in Scotland that established regular trade links with other English colonies in America.

During WWI there were 817 men that fought and died from Ayr, and in 1924 there was a memorial dedicated to those who died and unveiled at Wellington Square.

The famous Poet and Lyricist Robert Burns was born in Ayrshire in 1759 and lived there until 1796. He is known as the national poet of Scotland.
