Hastings is a seaside Resort town and is also a great place to enjoy some exploring around the beautiful historic town center or take a hike along the coastal landmarks. 

Hastings has a main Shopping Centre called Priory Meadow Shopping Centre, with 56 stores available to discover. There are more retail areas in the center of town down Queens Road, Robertson Street & Wellington Place. 

You will find 3 museums in Hastings, The Hastings Fishermen’s Museum, The Shipwreck Museum and The Hastings Museum and Art Gallery. Hastings Museum and Art Gallery is one of the most popular, with 100,000 artifacts related to culture, art and the history of the area, so there is much to see! 

Take a walk down Hastings Pier and enjoy the beautiful sights, or just relax and get a bite to eat from their food & Drink stalls and coffee shops or look out the telescopes! 

You can easily explore the remains of Hastings Castle on the Town’s west Hill, the castle is popular for its ‘’whispering dungeon’’ which is still intact and has many displays of the events that occurred in the historic period. 

Hastings has two Cliff Railways going up and down it’s sandstone cliffs. The railway runs through a tunnel and still uses its Victorian Coaches, you will find the lower station in George Street departing from the old town. The East Hill lift will get you to Hastings Country Park, which has 660 acres of woodland, cliffs and heathland, there is plenty of Wildlife that can be seen in the park and beautiful sights overlooking the coast and Sea.

Travel 

Hastings town is an easily walkable town to get around and see the sights. If you are travelling by car you can easily get around to see the sights and other landmarks and towns/cities nearby and is the best option for travelling. 

It has two funicular cliff railways, which are very useful if you need to get up onto the cliffs or save you from climbing up to Hastings Castle. 

Hastings also has a Bus service that runs throughout the day with regular times to help you get around the town and nearby locations. 

You can get a Taxi around town however this can be expensive. 

Hastings has four railway stations - West St Leonards Stations, Hastings, St Leonard Warrior Square & Ore. Hastings Railway Station is the main station and is on the southern line. You can travel to many locations nearby, and you can also reach London in 1 hour and 50 minutes. 

The Battle of Hastings fought in 1066 was the start of the Norman Conquest. Duke William of Normandy defeated and killed King Harold, the last Saxon King of England, destroyed his army in the process.

In the middle ages Hastings became one of the Cinque Ports. This group of 5 ports were supposed to provide ships for the King during the time of war. In 1377 the French raided and burnt the town, causing the town to go into a decline and the Port’s days were finished. 

Hastings suffered from the  lack of a natural harbor, they tried to build a stone harbor during the reign of Elizabeth I, however the foundations were destroyed by the sea during terrible storms, Fishing boats rest on and are launched from the beach. In 1896, the last harbor project was attempted but failed due to structural problems and rising costs. All that remains today is a fractured seawall. 

Hastings castle was built by the Normans in 1070, four years after their invasion. It was first built out of wood but then rebuilt in stone. There is little that remains now of the castle, only part of the walls, dungeons and the arch from the chapel. 

Hastings Pier was built in 1872, it suffered major storm damage in 1990 and was closed in 2006 due to safety concerns. The Pier suffered a serious fire in 2070 which burnt down most of the buildings on the pier and damaged the structure. In 2016 It was reopened after refurbishment with a modern architectural form. 

During World War II Hastings had been bombed several times, over 15,000 buildings were left damaged or destroyed. 

During the Napoleonic wars and before, Hastings was known for its smuggling for hundreds of years, and the sandstone caves were burrowed with tunnels to be able to move and store contraband.
