History of Madrid

Madrid has been the Capital of Spain since 1561, except from the capital briefly being Valladolid between 1601 and 1606. However Philip II, moved the Royal Court back to Madrid at the end of the 16th Century. During the 17th Century, Madrid became extremely popular and grew rapidly attracting many of Spain's main leading artists and writers.

Madrid has managed to preserve many of its historic landmarks and streets. There are many national Museums, the National Library containing historical Archives, the Royal Theatre with a restored 1850 Opera House, and the Golden Triangle of Art which comprises three art museums.

Cibeles Palace and Fountain is a monumental symbol of the City and Puerta del Sol is probably the city's most famous spot, where people can gather to celebrate for events and occasions.
