Reims, the Champagne and Coronation city, is the discovery of an important part of France history.

With numerous points of interest and a few UNESCO world heritage sites, it’s a place worth visiting whether pilgrim or not. 

One UNESCO classified monument is the Palace of Tau, located right next to the Cathedral; it was once the residence of the Archbishops of Reims. It is nowadays a museum, and the Cathedral’s treasury exhibition place. You will find objects that have been used for the king’s coronations. 

It is also worth visiting the House of Champagne, which is one of the major attractions and wonder around the chalk caves with a guide. They will also offer champagne tasting at the end of the tour.

History of Reims

Famous around the world, Reims was the site of many important episodes of French history.

The cathedral of Reims was the place of coronation of the kings of France, in total 29 kings succeded one another in the sacred place. Expressing through their crowning a superiority over their people and proximity to God. The religious building was certainly noble enough for those prestigious visitors. Notre-Dame Cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic art made in the 13th century, and as an important fact one of its abbey even houses the remains of the Archbishop Saint Remi. The monument was classified by the UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1991. 

Another outstanding building by its beauty is the Basilica Saint-Rémi, from the 11th century romanesque. It used to be the place of worship for a lot of pilgrims throughout the years. It is also home for the tomb of Saint-Remi. 

The history museum is housed by the former Abbey of Saint-Rémi founded in the sixth century. The building is listed at the UNESCO World Heritage site. The museum of history and archaeology from prehistoric times to the Renaissance comprises a 12th century Romanesque charter house, 16th century tapestries representing the life of Saint Remi and had been keeping the relics of Saint Reminigius
