Bed and breakfast accommodation in Salamanca Monasteries

Another extraordinary building is the Casa de las Conchas, it´s façade is studded by carved stone shells reminiscent of those worn by pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago and it was built in 1517. It now houses the Public Library, so you can go in and admire the arches & Marble columns in the Courtyard. 

The University which was founded in 1134, with some of its earliest buildings still surrounding the area. The Museum of Salamanca is alongside these grand buildings. 

Salamanca has not only one, but two Cathedrals. The Old Cathedral is Romanesque, dates to the 12th Century. The adjoining New Cathedral was built over many years, between 1509 – 1734 when it was completed and has late Gothic Architecture with Renaissance style called Plateresque. 

The Plaza Mayor is considered to be one of the most Beautiful in Spain, with its Baroque Style, it was completed in 1755, perfect to visit for its incredible Plaza, and a number of different boutique shops, Bars and Restaurants. 

Travel 

Salamanca´s own airport (SLM) is small and only takes national flights. However, you can fly into Madrid-Barajas and you can get either a bus, train or taxi to Salamanca. 

Getting around Salamanca whilst in the city only takes around 30 minutes to walk from one side to the other as it´s a small City, meaning all of its attractions and sights are all close by within walking distance. Most of the City is Pedestrianized so that’s its most popular way to get around and explore.  

There is both a Bus and Train station in Salamanca, with regular running times. You can also get around the City by Taxi.

One of the most important moments in Salamanca´s history was in 1218 when Alfonso IX of León granted a royal charter to the University of Salamanca. 

During the 16th Century, the city reached its height of grandeur. Salamanca suffered the general downturns of the Kingdom of Castile during the 17th Century, but in the 18th Century it experienced a Rebirth. 

In 1812, the western quarter of Salamanca was seriously damaged by cannon fire in the Peninsular War of the Napoleonic Battle of Salamanca, in which an Anglo-Portuguese Army led by Wellington decisively defeated the French army of Marmont. 

During the devastating Spanish Civil War, the city quickly went over to the Nationalist side and was used as the de facto Capital, Franco was named Generalissimo in 1937. 

In 1988, the old city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

Salamanca is one of Spain's most intriguing cities as there are countless architectural buildings to see down it´s narrow lanes. 

The Puente Romano de Salamanca(Roman Bridge)  located on the Via de la Plata (Roman Silver Route) made with 15 granite arches, runs across the Tormes River, originally constructed in the year 89, then reconstructed in the 17th Century after being damaged by flooding.
