The museum of Beaux-Arts de Tours is located in the bishop's former palace, near the cathedral St. Gatien. It displays rich and varied collections, including that of painting which is one of the first in France both in quality and the diversity of the works presented. 

The Botanic gardens of Tours are exquisite botanical gardens and arboretum, it was first established by a pharmacist Jean-Anthyme Margueron and is the oldest public garden in the city. It has almost 2000 medical and exotic plants arranged in greenhouses. 

And do not leave before seeing Place Plumereau, the heart of Old Tours, in one of the largest conserved urban areas in Europe, where cafes and restaurants sit beneath and mansions and half-timbered houses from the 15th century, alongside the beautiful Romanesque and Renaissance façades.

History of Tours

Tours is also home for history and religion, it’s cathedral is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Gatianus and is still today the seat of the Archbishop of Tours. The monument has got notable features including elaborately decorated west towers and medieval stained glass. 

But also the stunning Basilica from the 19th century cannot be missed as the neo-Byzantine monument stands on the tomb of Saint Martin of Tours. It is also next to two Romanesque towers and a Renaissance cloister from a past basilica. 

And the last but not least, the Priory of St. Cosmas is a former priory built upon an island in the Loire River at La Riche, founded in the 11th Century and dedicated to St. Cosmas. The site features a museum dedicated to the French poet Ronsard, who spent the last twenty years of his life among the Canons Regular there.
