The Cathedral Church of Christ in Durham has a beautiful Romanesque style architecture and is at the top of the list for sights to see whilst visiting and can be found across Palace Green or can be seen from the banks of the River Wear.
Just across from the Cathedral, you will see the Durham Castle which is a magnificent building not to be missed!
There are many Museums that can be visited whilst in Durham, the Museum of Archaeology at Palace Green Library, The Oriental Museum on Elvet Hill, Durham Heritage Centre and Museum on St Mary-le-Bow amongst others.
Take a stroll in the Botanic Gardens located at the Durham University, with 25 acres of mature woodlands to explore and take in its beautiful scenery.
You can wander along the cobbled streets, over its bridges, to Saddler Street where you will find most of Durham’s delicious Restaurants to choose from.
There is a selection of local shops mainly found at the Prince Bishops Shopping Centre.
Travel
Durham is a small city so it’s easy to walk most places, or you can also cycle.
You can travel by Bus, as they run regularly and have many stops in Durham and throughout it’s area.
You can get a Train to Newcastle in the North which runs on a regular basis.
However, if you hire a car, it is also an easier way to get around and you can also visit a few local areas nearby:
- Durham to the Angel of the North (A Famous sculpture which stands on a hill) – 15 minutes by Car.
- Durham to Newcastle – Less than 30 minutes by car.
- Durham to the Lake District National Park – 1hour 30 minutes by car.
