Overview

The complex has been enlarged and enriched throughout the years. The church exemplifies French-style early Gothic (1212). The Santuario of the Holy Spirit was supposedly built by Charlemagne to contain the tomb of his nephew Roland. Hostal La Posada functions as a small hotel. It has 12 double and 6 quadruple rooms with private bath. Roncesvalles is located on the Spanish side of a pass through the Pyrenees, the mountain range between Spain and France. It is the starting point of Santiago de Compostela. It is believed that this was the route taken when the body of  James, Christ's apostle, was brought to Galicia.
