The shrine was founded around the 13th century after the apparition of the Virgin Mary to a criminal. Despite the vicissitudes that vexed the shrine throughout the centuries, it has become a popular pilgrimage site. The sisters of Notre-Dame de la Salette manage the institution and offer hospitality to visitors and pilgrims.
