Convento di Santa Maria Dei Servi, San Sepolcro

History

The story of the complex dates to 1246 when a group of laymen gathered on Mount Senario (high above Florence) and began to live there in prayer and poverty. They did so until 1250 at which time they established the order of the Servi di Maria. The order found new homes in northern and central Italy, settling in small villages and towns, living in prayer and fraternity. In 1255 they founded a convent outside Sansepolcro but then moved inside the walls of the town for reasons of safety. The new convent was started in 1294 and in 1382 the church was dedicated to Santa Maria Mother of God. The  complex was restructured in 1717 and 1727 at which time it acquired the present Baroque style of the interiors. The exterior walls reflect the original Gothic structure.

All meals can be offered on request to groups of at least ten people.

Other facilities

There is a conference hall, a large refectory, meeting room, TV room and a picturesque private garden situated above the ancient walls of the town. The gardens overlook the square where local crossbow shooters train.
