Aix-en-Provence Visitor information

Aix-en-Provence is a university town in the South of France, only 30 kilometres from Marseille, is a famous classical Provençal town. 

Famous for being home to Paul Cézanne, post-impressionist painter, you can visit the « Atelier Cézanne » where you will see the objects which are dear to him and the models of his paintings.

If you wish to learn more about the Provençal region, you can visit the Museum of History and Traditions of Aix called « Estienne de Saint Jean » established in a 17th century mansion. Visitors can glimpse at the furnitures, figurines, ceramics and archair objects from the rich and beautiful aristocratic life.

The healthy mediterranean cuisine and local products will thrill you, as the gastronomy in Aix is full of diversity and is based with olive oil and herbs such like : Basil, Oregano, Thyme, Rosemary, Fennel. But also, some specialities like tapenade of olives, lavender honey, Calisson d’Aix and many other ingredients can be found at the provincial market or local shops. 

Access to Aix by Train 

Either take Eurostar direct to Marseille and get in a taxi or bus to Aix, or change onto a TGV in Paris or Lille. You can leave from St Pancras International in London or from one of our stations in Kent.

Access to Aix by Plane

Situated 40 minutes away from Aix-en-Provence, Marseille Provence International Airport there is a bus shuttle every 30 minutes.

History of Aix-en-Provence

Aix-en-Provence is an open air history book, with a rich and vibrant history of thousands of years old, the artistic town has come a long way from it’s Roman roots. The Saint Sauveur Cathedral has become a religious landmark and remains a place of worship for Catholics, with sculptures of the apostle flanking the doors of the cathedral and numerous artworks from the 15th century such as the most valuable paint by Nicolas Froment in the Saint Lazarus Chapel.
