How to get around? 

The best way to get around Marseille is on foot, since most of the neighborhoods are pedestrian-friendly and easy to navigate. However, the metro and tram lines are fast, affordable and efficient ways of getting around, too.

But the very best holy place to visit in Marseille is Notre Dame-de-la-Garde Basilica, the building dominating the city from the hilltop overlooking the mountains, the city and the sea. It is called by the people of Marseille "la Bonne Mère", it has lived three lives. First built in 1214 - at the time as a small chapel – it was rebuilt in the 15th century before being destroyed again in 1853, to make way for a larger basilica. The aim was to have enough space to accommodate the pilgrims who are becoming numerous since the appearance of cholera.
