The historic center of old Troyes will transport you to a different era, the medieval quarter is very large and that’s because there are two districts: The Cite where the nobility and clergy had their residence and the Bourg for the merchants and hoi polloi. Dawdling from shop to shop is almost an all day activity.

Hotel de Mauroy is a joyous Renaissance mansion and one Troyes’ loveliest sights. It is home to the largest tool museum in the world. You can see there the hand-crafted masterpieces created by the Compagnons du Devoirs.

In addition to being a paradise for bargain hunters, Troyes can boast about being a beautiful city with an important cultural heritage.

History of Troyes

Faith is on the show at Troyes, there are no less than 10 Catholic churches which is a lot for a small town like Troyes, one of the most remarkable churches is Sainte-Madeleine from the 12th century it’s the oldest and certainly one of the most beautiful. Saint-Madeleine is striking and the apse’s stained glass window, a masterpiece of all finesse.

But Troyes has got more than churches, the sensational Troyes Cathedral from the 13th century is now home to two major reliquaries, of Bernard of Clairvaux and of Malachy of Ireland are now on public display. This beautiful building is technically unfinished, as one of the bell towers is incomplete .

Between Gothic and Renaissance, visiting Troyes is like going back in medieval history, reliving the colourful atmosphere and admiring the incredible religious heritage left behind.
