Monastic Village, Steyl

History

This worldwide missionary movement was started by the German priest and missionary, Arnold Janssen, who is buried in the lower church of the Mission House. His canonization in 2003 greatly enhanced the prestige and popularity of Steyl. Mother Josepha Stenmanns (declared blessed in 2008) and mother Maria Stollenwerk (1995) are buried in the Sacred Heart Monastery. Steyl is very much an international religious center, both in outlook and makeup. "The dozens of inhabitants of the monasteries come from all over the world," said Father Jan van As, who also accompanies regular pilgrimages to Israel and Rome, organized in Steyl.

Food & beverage

For a nice meal right on the river, the cafe-restaurant  "'t Vaerhoes" (the Boathouse), is located near the Saint Michael Mission house, on the banks of the river Maas. 

Other facilities

Even with all the daily activity in Steyl, a peaceful and meditative atmosphere prevails in the convent village. This tranquility is the backdrop of the many things to see and do throughout the complex. In the chapels and churches of the monasteries, especially in the chapel of the 'pink sisters', you will find an oasis of peace. There is a mission museum, focusing on local natural history and an interesting array of ethnological objects from Steyl. In the park-like area between the monasteries, you will find the Sacred Heart hill, which gives a great view of the area. Also worth exploring are the caves with biblical figures inside, including ‘Lourdes cave’, the Jochumhof botanical garden, and a beautiful monastery cemetery. Adding to the beauty of Steyl is its location on the river Maas, which you can cross by ferry or walk and cycle along its banks.
