The Primitive Way - Camino de Santiago

Camino Primitivo

Oviedo
Asturias
Santiago de Compostela
321km

The original route, beginning in Oviedo, is believed to have been walked as early as the 9th Century and considered the first and original pilgrimage route to the city of Santiago. One of the three Northern Routes through Spain - the route can be combined with the Camino Frances or Camino del Norte paths, both of which verge through Oviedo.

Starting at the Cathedral in Oviedo, before crossing a mountain range and climbing as high as 1100m above sea level, the 325km trek is regarded as the most physically demanding of the Camino routes as it crosses through the forests and mountains in Asturias and Galicia. However, it is well worth the effort for views of the surrounding mountains, the Embalse de Salime and the River Navia.
