Alcalá de Henares Visitor information

There is a beautiful square called ´Plaza Cervantes´ with an open-air sculpture Museum, it has 58 Modern art sculptures, which can all be spotted whilst wandering around the town! The historical streets called Calle Mayor, have many shops, bakeries, restaurants and tapas bars. The streets are lined with porticos, 18th century pillars really showing off its history!  

Unlike the capital Madrid, Alcalá de Henares is an ideal location nearby to the capital to be able to visit but slightly a more affordable location! 

Travel 

There is a railway station, on the Madrid-Barcelona Railway, and many bus stops for you to be able to get around town. Madrid Airport is the closest to arrive at, and there are many ways for you to get to Alcalá de Henares either by bus, taxi, train or town car.

History of Alcalá de Henares

Alcalá de Henares is a city northeast of Madrid. Best known for its famous Spanish writer who wrote ´Don Quixote´, one of the world's famous novels. The incredible historical buildings in the City Centre include the University, which has 16th Century buildings in the old town, and was founded in 1293. There is a Cathedral of St Justus and St Pastor which was built between 1497 and 1515, the church was damaged in a fire during the Spanish Civil War(1936-39) & lost many of its treasures however it is still an incredible place to visit. There is also a beautiful Palace Laredo which was built in 1882.
