History

Founded in the 10th century, it passed under the rule of Cluny in the 11th. Throughout the years the relics of Ste-Marie-Madeleine have attracted thousands of pilgrims.

The devotion of the pilgrims incurred the jealousy of other religious institutions which resented the independence and wealth of the church. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the central nave in 1120 and the building could not be finished until 1215. The religious conflicts of the 16th century caused the church to decline. In 1840 architect Viollet-le-Duc began reconstruction of the church; work continued until completion in 1920.
