Overview

Hospitality at Clare Priory must not be conceived as hotel accommodations. Guests are free to visit the surroundings, but the friars wish them to take part in the daily liturgy, or in an organized retreat. There are 11 rooms, 4 of which can become doubles. 7 rooms have private baths, 4 have shared baths.

History

The religious occupation ended with Henry VIII’s suppressions in 1538. The house passed into the hands of private families until 1953 when the friars bought it back. The Priory now serves as home for a mixed community of Augustinian Friars and lay people living under St Augustine’s Rule, as well as a parish and retreat centre. The original 13th-century building does not exist anymore. After a fire, a new building was erected in the 14th century and was remodelled in the 15th. New extensions were also added in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Only one wall remains of the original
monastic church.
