History

The Old Carmel of Moissac, a major stopover on the thousand-year-old pilgrimage route to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle, has become a place of accommodation and reception.

The Cluniacs, promoters of this pilgrim route, had taken over, in 1147, this "royal" abbey, which was very much endowed with relics and welcoming capacity. The Abbey of Moissac enjoyed its golden age in the 11th and 12th centuries. From this prolific period date the cloister, the abbey church with its portal, the tympanum and its Romanesque sculptures. These architectural and ornamental achievements, witnesses of the cultural abundance, compete in refinement with the illuminations of the manuscripts in the monastery library. These manuscripts, produced by the scriptorium, the monks' writing workshop, were repatriated to Paris by Colbert in the 17th century.

Nowadays, Moissac, located at the quarter of the way between Le Puy and Compostelle, brings to the pilgrims the interest of a cultural site of international fame, all the accommodation facilities and in particular a reception and stay center: 'Elder Carmel. Built in 1857 - 1858 to establish a Carmelite convent, the Old Carmel, now owned by the City and managed by the French Alpine Club, houses a reception center for the many pilgrims who “make” the way to Santiago de Compostela

The cloister and the Romanesque portal of the Saint-Pierre de Moissac abbey were listed as World Heritage by UNESCO in 1998, under the "St James Way's of France" property. An international recognition which perfectly illustrates the prestige of the heritage of the uvale city.
