History

The interior of the church reveals hundreds of ex-voto (an offering placed as a token of thanks), which have been collected over the centuries. Many more are preserved by the friars who reside in the convent. The church has been remodelled several times, most recently in 1923. A decade later, its interior was ornamented with frescoes by Tiburzio Donadon, an artist from Pordenone.

On the first Sunday of July, the village stages a colourful boat parade called the Perdon de’ Barbana. The event consists of a spectacular procession of boats from Grado to Barbana, where the bishop and local population are blessed. The event commemorates a vow taken by the people of Grado in the 13th century when they promised to worship the statue of Mary at least once a year. On August 15th, the Festa dell’Ospite takes place and celebrates the summer visitors who double the population of the small town.
