Overview

Guadalupe is a picturesque village of narrow streets and ancient houses that grew up around the monastery, one of the most famous in Spain.

The Monastery welcomes guests with 46 double, triple and quadruple rooms and 1 suite, each with private bath. Both men and women are welcome.

History

Founded in 1340, the architecture is a combination of Gothic, Mudéjar and Plateresque components of unusual grandeur. In many ways, the monastery closely resembles a medieval castle. The west front of its church is delineated by two square flanking towers. Originally inhabited by Jerónimos monks, the monastery flourished under the Catholic kings and became an important cultural centre acquiring schools of grammar and medicine, three hospitals, a pharmacy and a valuable library. In 1402, the first Spanish anatomical dissection was performed in the medical facility.
