History

The congregation was founded in Castelspina by the Franciscan friar minor Innocenzo Gamalero (1837 - 1917), treasurer of the convent of Rivalta Bormida, and by Chiara Ottavia Ricci (1834 - 1900) for childcare in the town's kindergarten: the name of "Angeline" given to the nuns derives from the naming of the institute to the Virgin of the Angels.

The institute was erected into a congregation of diocesan right on 29 September 1885 and received the pontifical decree of praise on 13 May 1928; aggregated to the Order of Friars Minor from February 22, 1937, its constitutions were definitively approved by the Holy See on June 1, 1938.

The Angeline Franciscans are dedicated to teaching in schools and kindergartens, to parish works and to assisting the elderly and the sick in hospitals and retirement homes.

The perfect location to explore this beautiful city and a short walk to The Basilica of St. Francis. I was welcomed straight away by the cheery faces of the Sisters. The Chapel is haven of tranquillity & was well used by a variety of guests. Breakfast, a welcome coffee & a few pastries, is also a great time to interact with other guests and pilgrims. The rooms are basic and kept very clean and tidy, as is the whole area. A delightful stay. Thankyou. Br. Simon

Beautiful and peaceful location. Jasmine blooming on front gate. Felt like going back in time. Quick walk to Basilica of St. Frances. All of Assisi is walkable from here. Just across the street is a restaurant with a terrace with spectacular views as the sun sets. Sisters were kind and provided a nice breakfast with cappuccino. Would love to stay here again.

One point future guests should be aware of which is not currently indicated on the convent’s list of facilities is that payment must be by cash and not card. Finding that out on the day we left was not an idiot but it might have been if we were in a hurry to get to the station and hadn’t got cash to hand.
