Overview

New Norcia is Australia's only monastic town, located on the west side of the country.

In keeping with St Benedict’s rule of hospitality for guests, the Monastery Guesthouse is a place of retreat for individuals and groups from all walks of life and beliefs seeking to quietly share the simple life, prayer and rhythms of the Benedictine monastic community of New Norcia.

Set around a cloistered courtyard garden of Australian native shrubs at the southern end of the Monastery, the Guesthouse has eight twin-share rooms with en-suites, and six single rooms and one twin room with shared facilities (for adult guests only).

Guests and groups can also access a range of work and performance spaces, including St Joseph’s Hall, the Work Centre and the Seminar Room, as well as the town’s recreational facilities, such as ovals, tennis courts and basketball courts.

For groups and families, please consult the group enquiry page to make a request.

History

New Norcia was founded by Spanish Benedictine monks in 1847 and was named after Norcia in Italy, the birthplace of St Benedict.

From the earliest days of its foundation New Norcia has been focussed on education. The first Abbot, of New Norcia (Rosendo Salvado) established the Aboriginal girls and boys schools and the second Abbot of New Norcia, Fulgentius Torres built and opened the European girls and boys schools, which closed in 1991.

The town has had many purposes since; a mission, a monastery, a provider of education and now as a place of spiritual retreat.

The Monastery, where the monks live, work and pray, is at the heart of New Norcia. The monks of New Norcia live according to the guidance and rhythms of The Rule of St Benedict, which has been followed by monks since the sixth century AD. Monks who do so are referred to as ‘Benedictines’. Unlike many priests and nuns, monks do not join an ‘order’ as such, but instead join an autonomous monastery where they promise to remain for the rest of their lives.

Food & beverage

Simple, home cooked, self-serve meals are provided in the dining room.

Following the tradition of the monastic community, lunch is the main meal of the day, including three courses and a glass of wine. A lighter two-course supper is provided in the evening. Upon request, every effort is made to welcome guests, who wish to have a meal with the monks in the monastery refectory, which is taken in silence with reading.

Guests can order light meals from the Roadhouse for breakfast and lunch, where there is also a small bar open from 11am-4.30pm
