Overview

The monastery's accommodation offers 20 single and double rooms (35 beds), most with private bath. Both men and women are welcome. Refugio de San Bernardo is a large dormitory (24 beds) for groups of youths seeking spiritual retreats.

History

It was originally inhabited by a male and female community of hermits who lived according to the Cenobitic rules of San Benito under the auspices of founder Ramon de Vallbona.

In 1175, the male community was transferred to Montsant and the remaining female community converted to the Cistercian Order. The nuns dedicated themselves to working the land and the monastery prospered under their guidance. Its fame was so widespread that it hosted kings like Alfonso el Casto, Alfonso el Sabio and Jaime I.

Since 1200, the monastery has maintained a cultural centre where the nuns copy and decorate books. They also teach grammar, liturgy, calligraphy and music. Over the centuries, the complex was enlarged resulting in a mix of architectural styles. The Gothic church most likely dates from the 14th century and safeguards several precious tombs including that of Queen Violante of Hungary. It was the queen's request to be buried in the church in a tomb devoid of ornamentation. The tomb of Princess Sancha, the queen's daughter, is contained within the church as well. The 14th-century statue of the Virgin Mary by Guillem Seqauer distinguishes the choir.
