History

According to tradition, the monastery was founded by the Benedictines around the 9th century. Historical data, however, traces its founding to the Abbey Oliba da Ripoll in 1025. Over the years, the importance of the monastery grew and in 1410, it was declared an independent abbey.

In 1811 when the French attacked Catalonia during the War of Independence, the monks were killed and the monastery nearly destroyed. In 1844, it was rebuilt and repopulated. The Renaissance cloister, a notable section of the complex, is the only remaining part of the original edifice. Built by the Italian, Giuliano della Rovere, he later became Pope Giulio III. The monastery also hosted many opponents of the Regime of Franco. It was the place where the first Bible in Catalan was printed (1918) and continues to be an important center for the preservation and diffusion of the Catalan language and culture. Under Franco's rule, the church was the only religious institution permitted to celebrate mass in Catalan. To this day, thousands of couples of Catalan descent are married in Montserrat in a service conducted in their very distinct language.
