History

The Santo Spirito Monastery was founded in 1290 by the noblewoman Rosalia Prefoglio, wife of Federico Chiaramonte I.
The marchisia endowed the monastery with goods, land and a large quantity of livestock.

In 1321 the community was made up of 15 nuns, and only girls of noble origins were welcomed.
Subsequently, in 1579 the monastery passed under the diocesan ordinary Mons. Lombardo until 1585, and later regained vigor from the vocational point of view. In 1732 the community had in fact 50 members.

In 1866 the Santo Spirito Monastery was suppressed following the subversive laws of the state, but the community was allowed to continue to live there.
In 1953, three nuns from the Cistercian monastery of San Severino Marche were assigned to help the community of Agrigento and on 11 January 1964 the constitutional clause was introduced.
Finally, on March 12, 2005, the Monastery was incorporated into the Cistercian order.

Today, the monastic community, made up of 6 nuns from different Italian regions, continues to exist in full vitality.

Sister Silvia, was very helpful and gave us a nice welcome. The rooms were spotlessly clean and the beds were comfortable. At breakfast there was plenty of fresh fuit, as well as packaged croissants small cakes, jams and toast. The location was very central and the monastery is very characterful. It would have been useful to have directions to get to the monastery by public transport. It would have also been helpful to have some info about the local area within room.

Lovely room with gorgeous view. Furnishings basic but clean and comfortable. Tiny shared kitchen with kettle and fridge and one-ring cooker very useful for us. We ate in a couple of nights. Breakfast provided included fresh fruit and lovely home-baking from the nuns. Sr Sylvia welcomed us warmly and took care of us without being intrusive. We loved our peaceful stay. We had the whole place to ourselves. Kitchen could be crowded if a lot of people were staying.

Very good adress to sleep quietly in the historical center : room very clean, big and well equiped; beds very confortable, everything perfect with the possibility to park the car. Thanks to the sisters for their warm welcome and support. Trip realized in august 2024.

Very welcoming and kind - we were very late and still had a great welcome. Basic facilities (although had a/c) but everything worked and it was great value for money and a great experience
