History

The Meteora monasteries in central Greece sit on top of tall rock towers that rise high above the valley. Monks first came here around the 11th century, searching for peace and quiet. In the 14th century, they built monasteries on the cliffs to stay safe from attacks. Long ago there were 24 monasteries, but today only six are still active. They remain important places for the Greek Orthodox Church and are known for their amazing history, beauty, and stunning views.
