Overview

The town of Núria is inaccessible by car. In the past, the complex could only be reached via Els Pelegrins Trail through a verdant, albeit rocky valley of the thundering Río Núria. Now it can be accessed by a cable train (Little Cremallera Railway) from Ribes de Freser or Queralbs, an attractive stone village. The steep seven-mile journey rises over 3,250'.

The hotel has 65 double, triple and quadruple rooms each with a private bath. There are also 10 apartments, each with 4-5 beds, a private bath and dining room. Both men and women are welcome.

History

According to tradition, the Greek hermit Saint Gil (later appointed abbot in Nimes, France), lived here in solitude between 700 and 703. During that period, he sculpted an image of Mary. Forced by the persecution of the times, he fled Núria and left the image hidden in a small cave.

In 1072, a man called Amadeo was inspired by a divine vision and began his search for the relics of the Virgin Mary and other possessions of the hermit. When Amadeo's mission proved unsuccessful, he built a chapel on the sacred site. The chapel was finished in 1079 and then, as legend has it, the relics he had been seeking miraculously appeared in the chapel. They included a cross, the pot used by the saint to cook his meals and the bell that later became the symbol of Núria.
