Overview

The complex is composed of a Baroque 17th-century church, cloister and convent (cells of the friars, refectory, chapter house and library). The simple cloister is adorned with a fine collection of Baroque paintings representing scenes from the life of Santo Domingo de Guzman. The church’s impressive retablo was built to preserve the statue of the Virgen de Las Caldas. Each of the six lateral chapels has a retablo dedicated to a saint.

There is accommodation available that features  7 doubles (that can become triples) with private bath. Both men and women are welcome. The hospedería is the property of the monks but is managed like a small hotel. Since it is often fully booked on weekends, the management suggests mid-week stays. Open year round.

History

The original hermitage (which contained the image of Mary) dates to medieval times. It was near the thermal waters of the Besaya River and was the property of the town of Barros. Las Caldas means ”the hot” in Latin and referred to the waters.

In 1605, the Dominican friars of Santillana Del Mar were asked to settle in the Hermitage. They accepted and became an independent monastery in 1611. After a pilgrimage, Prior Malfaz became devoted to the Virgin. In 1663, he laid the groundwork for the present structure. Funds were provided by Ana María Velarde de la Sierra, a local woman of means. The project was completed in 1683 and the 12th-century statue of Mary was then transferred to the new church.
