The abbey owes its name to its birthplace in the neighborhood of Berne, on the river Maas, near the town of Heusden. Over its long history, the Norbertines of Berne have had to flee war and persecution and seek safety several times: during the Eighty Years’ War in the 16th-17th centuries, after the peace of Munster in 1648, and during the French Revolutionary wars in the late 18th century. By remaining active in the local parishes, however, the monks were always able to return and rebuild the abbey. In 1857, the Norbertines finally settled in their present location, the castle of Heeswijk, and have slowly developed the abbey.
Visitors eat meals with the brothers and are encouraged to attend the three daily prayer services.
The abbey complex is large and you can easily get lost in the corridors adorned with paintings of former abbots. The buildings are old but well maintained, and have been upgraded to modern standards. The abbey has a cozy and welcoming atmosphere.
For pleasant walks in the area, visitors can roam the abbey garden or the nearby Heeswijk forest.
The excellent bookstore has a wide range of books, CDs, and art, as well as its own printing and publishing business. During spring and autumn, visitors can enjoy organ recitals and concerts, performed by local musicians.
In 2015, the abbey began selling its branded beer, Berne Abdijbier, produced by a nearby brewery. Every day at 2 pm there is a full abbey tour and beer tasting (in Dutch and in English upon request). Reservations for the tour can be made through the website or by phone.
