历史

The history of the Sanctuary of Maria SS. Addolorata begins on March 22, 1888, the day on which the Virgin appeared for the first time. Two local peasants were looking for a lost sheep when one of them was faced with a celestial vision: in the glow of the light the image of Maria SS.

Sorrowful half kneeling with her dead Son at her feet, her gaze turned towards the sky and her arms outstretched in an act of offering. On September 26, 1888, Mons. Francesco Macarone Palmieri, bishop of Bojano, went to the sacred place to "investigate" the alleged apparitions and had the grace of seeing Lady of Sorrows as she appeared to the two peasant women.

It was September 28, 1890 when the first stone of the Sanctuary of Maria SS. Addolorata di Castelpetroso and Mons. Francesco Macarone Palmieri, in the course of a solemn celebration, officially started the works. The consecration, on the other hand, took place only on 21 September 1975.

Via Matris

The Via Matris of Castelpetroso, inaugurated on 27 October 1947, is a 750-meter path that winds along the mountain and connects the Sanctuary with the place of the apparitions. Divided into seven stages, each one was marked by a copper shrine, enclosed in a masonry niche, which commemorates one of the seven sorrows. In the nineties, very suggestive bronze sculptural groups, the work of the artist Alessandro Caetani, were then placed near each newsstand.

Since 1947, thousands of faithful have crossed the Via Matris dolorosa, pausing and meditating on the pains that the Virgin Mary, mother and co-worker of the Savior, suffered during her life in the fulfillment of her mission. In the Via Matris, the entire life of the Virgin is divided into seven 'stations', corresponding to seven episodes in which the piety of the Christian people identified the seven 'main' pains of the Mother of the Lord, namely: - Presentation of Jesus in the Temple - Flight into Egypt - Loss of Jesus - Maria SS. meets the Son Jesus on the way to Calvary - Maria SS. attends the crucifixion of the Son Jesus - Maria SS. receives in her arms Jesus taken down from the cross - Maria SS. lays the dead Jesus in the sepulcher The path traveled by Jesus, the Son, from the court to Pilate and to Mount Calvary was also traveled by Mary, the Mother: it was largely a common path, so some "stations" of the Way of the Cross are coinciding with those of the Via Matris.

Tobias path

"Discovering oneself next to" traveling with the young Tobias, is the central theme of the new path that intertwines the naturalistic with the religious character and represents an appreciable work of safeguarding and enhancing the territory as well as a significant spiritual resource for the numerous pilgrims who, on a daily basis, go to the Marian Sanctuary. The path, blessed and inaugurated by Monsignor GianCarlo Bregantini on May 22, 2011, consists of eleven 70 × 50 wooden panels each of which describes a phase of Tobia's journey and which were chosen by the young scouts as the most expressive of discomfort and hopes typical of every young person. The project was carried out by the scout group Agesci Campobasso IV of the Parish of Santa Maria Maggiore in the Cathedral of the capital.
