Montpellier Informações para visitantes

Mediterrean, smart, attractive, welcoming, festive, both ancient and contemporary Montpellier is an exceptionally rich city, it is also an old university city, it’s university is one of the oldest in the world founded in 1160.

The unspoilt natural environment has been very well kept, such as the botanical gardens which are the oldest in France, founded by Henri IV in 1593.

And there are more advantages besides the unspoiled architecture and gardens, food for exemple. Montpellier’s favorite food is Oysters, thanks to the Étang de Thau, a large lagoon to the west of Montpellier that supplies oysters and mussels. They can be served in a few ways, with herbs and lightly baked, but most traditionally are a simple affair with lemon and a glass of the house white.

Montpellier is hosting each year the FISE festival (International festival of Extreme sports) the event the largest of its kind in Europe and takes place in August-September time.

História de Montpellier

Montpellier was founded in the 8th century, just 7 miles from the sea.

A must see for religious or nonreligious visitors, is the Cathedral St-Pierre in the city center, the Roman Catholic building was commissioned by pope Urban V in 1364 and was converted to a cathedral in 1536.

Montpellier is rich in very old churches although the town is now very modern, but there are also new churches with modern designs that are refreshing details to the city’s panorama, like Saint François.

The maguelone Cathedral is also worth to stop by as this Roman Catholic church stands on the isthmus between a pond and the sea, it was also once the episcopal seat of the former Bishop of Maguelone. Although some parts have been destroyed, the main body of the building remains functional and is a registered national monument of France.
