The monastery is in the small town of Santo Domingo de Silos amid a landscape of rolling hills. It was founded in 954 after a donation to San Sebastian. From 1041 to 1073, the Abbot Domingo lived in the monastery. He was a monk from the La Rioja region of Spain and had ruled several monasteries in Navarra. His body rests in a sarcophagus supported by Romanesque lions. A charismatic leader, the institution’s name was changed to honor him. Over the ensuing centuries, the complex was enlarged and enhanced with works of art and continued as an important cultural and spiritual center until its closure in 1835 during the religious suppressions.
In 1880, it was reopened by a community of French monks from Solesmes, a village in northwest France. They restored the spiritual life of the monastery and introduced a style of singing known as plainsong or plainchant, an ancient and austere unharmonized melody in free rhythm.
