历史

The Maison Saint-Michel is part of a venerable historical complex whose origins date back to the end of the 13th century, when the Antonines, hospitable monks, bought the "Colongère Court" of Issenheim from Murbach Abbey. They built the current Maison St-Antoine there. For several years, the religious received and cared for a large number of patients suffering from "burning sickness" or ergotism.

Between 1512 and 1516, Mathias GRÜNEWALD painted the famous world famous Altarpiece. This triptych, placed on the altar of the choir of the conventual church, was to support the sick and give meaning to their suffering.

From the fourteenth to the nineteenth century, the site has experienced many vicissitudes due to multiple wars, epidemics, fires.
The Sisters of Divine Providence of Ribeauvillé bought the estate in 1844 then built the current Maison St-Michel on the former outbuildings of the Antonine convent, to accommodate the deaf-mutes of Guebwiller. Subsequently, the House will be in turn a Household School, a preparatory school for postulants and, since 1966, a reception center for spiritual retreats and religious formation sessions in a silent and calm environment, conducive to prayer and renewal.
