Roncesvalles is traditionally regarded as the place where the army of Charlemagne, led by Roland, was slaughtered by the Basques in 778. Although no evidence exists of the battle, the 12th-century epic poem, Chanson de Roland, praised Roland's heroism and presented Charlemagne as the saviour of Christendom.

Directions:
By car: From Pamplona take route 135 north to Roncesvalles.
By train: Get off in Pamplona and take the bus to Roncesvalles. There is only one bus per day; it leaves Pamplona at 6:00 pm.
