Enveloped by the beautiful valley of the Río Lozoya, it was founded by Juan I in 1390 and built on the site of a medieval royal hunting lodge. Although the structure is mainly Gothic in design, Romanesque and Plateresque traits are evident. During the 15th and 16th centuries, the monastery achieved a certain degree of importance and remained a renowned spiritual centre until it was closed during the religious suppression of 1836. Abandoned until 1954, the monastery was then given to the Benedictine Order. In 1976, it was declared a national monument.
