Monastero di San Ponziano, Spoleto

Historie

The monastery's church was built in the 11th century (the exact date is something of a mystery), on the site where Saint Ponziano the Martyr was buried in 175 AD. The nuns who occupied the monastery (before the Augustinian Order) sold the monastery’s historical archives to a nobleman of Spoleto and the documents have since been lost. The facade of the church is ornate with overhanging sculptures and a portal decorated with mosaics. Enriched with 13th and 14th-century frescoes, the interior of the church was renovated by the architect Valadier in 1788.
