The entire island belongs to the Abbey and was founded in the early phases of Celtic Monasticism. The shrines on the islands off the Scottish coast are other examples representing that period. Many institutions have not survived the course of history, or have been occupied by other religious orders but the splendid Caldey Abbey is an exception to the rule. It maintains the austere lifestyle of contemplation typical of the early monastic rules. The island, whose name derives from the Viking “Keld Eye” – cold island, has been inhabited since the Stone Age, however, the first monastic occupation dates to the 6th century.

A Park and Ride bus is available from Tenby's North Beach Car Park to the harbour when the Tenby “pedestrianization” scheme is operating (summer holiday period). Car parking is available in Tenby at the Multi-Story Car Park, Salterns Car Park and North Beach Car Park - pay and display. All are within a 10-15 minute walk from the harbour. The monks suggest the first or last boat to the island with the cargo. They are free of charge for guests of the monastery and is usually uncrowded.
