Histoire

The entire island belongs to the Abbey and was founded in the early phases of Celtic Monasticism. The shrines on the islands off the Scottish coast are other examples representing that period. Many institutions have not survived the  course of history, or have been occupied by other religious orders but the splendid Caldey Abbey is an exception to the rule. It maintains the austere lifestyle of contemplation typical of the early monastic rules. The island, whose name derives from the Viking “Keld Eye” – cold island, has been inhabited since the Stone Age, however, the first monastic occupation dates to the 6th century.
