Winchester to Canterbury - British Pilgrimage Route

Pilgerweg Canterbury

Winchester
Hampshire
Canterbury
Kent
192km

This historical British Pilgrimage route traverses southern England, taking pilgrims from Winchester in Hampshire to the ending point, the shrine of Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral in Kent.

The 192km route follows an ancient trackway dating back as far as 600 BC, running the entire length of the North Downs, which linked the English Channel to religious sites of Avebury and Stongehenge.

Today, the route is paralleled by the North Downs Way National Trail from Farnham to Canterbury and, given much of the old route is incorporated into the road network, walkers are encouraged to use St Swithun’s Way between Winchester and Farnham.
