Panoramica

Lay personnel run the house and offer hospitality to individuals, families and groups for holidays, retreats, conferences and celebrations. There is also a program of spirituality events at Whirlow Grange available on the website.

The accommodation has 21 single, 1 double, 7 twin and 1 king size room. All rooms have private baths. Access is provided for the disabled.


Storia

Whirlow Grange began as a private house and was converted into a retreat and training centre in 1953 by Reverend Leslie Hunter, Bishop of Sheffield from 1939 to 1962. George Pace, a famous York architect designed the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. In 2004 after a major renovation, the bedrooms were converted into en-suite facilities. At that time the management of the house passed into the hands of a registered charity that operates in association and with the support of the Diocese of Sheffield.

The house also lays claim to an award-winning garden. “Its beauty is in its variety and its large number of different plants and shrubs,” said the Warden.

By car: From London take M1 and exit at junction 29. Take A617 to Chesterfield. Before entering Chesterfield take A61 towards Sheffield. Pass three roundabouts and approach the fourth roundabout in the left-hand lane. Turn left - signed (A621) Bakewell and (A625) Castleton and then immediately occupy the right-hand lane to turn right in 200 yards (also signed Beauchief). Descend a hill through a housing suburb to a roundabout at the bottom - Abbey Lane. Turn left - signed (A621) Bakewell and (A625) Castleton and follow the road to traffic lights. Go straight across at traffic lights - signed Castleton B6068 (A625), follow up through wooded areas and bear left at next junction into Whirlowdale Road (straight and tree-lined). At the T junction turn right, Whirlow Grange Conference Centre is immediately on the left. By train: Take a train from London St. Pancras or London King’s Cross to Sheffield. Once in Sheffield take a taxi or a bus to Whirlow Grange. Buses that go to Whirlow Grange are #272, #214 (Doyles Coaches), #65 (TML Coaches).
