Monasterio de Iranzu

Historie

As befitting a Cistercian institution, the church and its cloisters reflect an austere but graceful simplicity. The first information about the monastery dates to the 11th century when it was a Benedictine institution, founded by Saint Adrián.

Within the next hundred years, the monastery had just about disappeared; the church was the only evidence of its previous existence. The institution was rebuilt in 1176 by the Cistercian Order with funds supplied by Don Pedro de Paris, Bishop of Pamplona.
