História

According to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared to a six-year-old girl and warned the local populace about their morality and asked them to build a chapel in honour of the apparition or face castigation.

A chapel was promptly erected on the site of the venerated shrine. In 1553, a guest house was also built, the same structure that exists today. A larger church was built in 1590 but destroyed at the end of the 18th century. A few stones of the original wall are all that remain of the second church. These stones are contained within the present complex. The church's Renaissance retablo is preserved in the chapel of the Santissim Sagrament. Composed of various wooden paintings dedicated to Mary and the Rosary, it is quite different in appearance from the later Baroque structure.

The third and final church was begun in 1652 and completed in 1774. Baroque in style, the retablo was executed by sculptor Carles Marató and took fourteen years to complete.
