Geschichte

The monastery was founded in 1646 by Doña María de Lazkano, a wealthy noblewoman who owned much of the land and buildings in the area. The first stone of the structure was set in 1650 and construction was completed in 1716. Doña María’s son and daughter had died at a very young age; she founded the monastery in their memory and dedicated it to her son. The Carmelite monastery of Santa Teresa de Ávila (today a Benedictine institution) was dedicated to her daughter. In the last years of her life, Doña María De Lazkano joined the sisters and lived as a nun until her death in 1658. The church contains the tombs of Doña María, her husband and son.
