Aperçu

Since 2006, the apostolic community, Chemin Neuf (New Road) has been residing in Saint Pauls’s Abbey, one of the abbeys of the ‘Holy Triangle’ in Oosterhout. The former community of Benedictine monks had recently vacated the abbey. The older monks went to a elderly home for monastics. The new community, an international and mixed-gender group of devotees and their families, continues the tradition of work and prayer. In addition, they also receive guests in the abbey.

Histoire

The history of Saint Paul’s Abbey begins in 1907, when a group of French monks came to Oosterhout to escape religious persecution in their homeland. Their monastery thrived and was promoted to the status of an abbey in 1928. During these years, Saint Paul’s was a seedbed for the expansion of the Benedictine order in The Netherlands, responsible for the formation of several other abbeys. After a century, however, the decline of the Benedictine community led to their eventual exodus from Oosterhout; and to complete the circle, the abbey was granted a new lease on life with the arrival of Chemin Neuf. Saint Paul’s Abbey has a French community once again - this time of free will!

Espaces verts et alentours

The abbey building is a treat to explore. The French monk-architect, Dom Bellot, designed the abbey, and monk-architect, van der Laan, built the guesthouse later. Saint Paul’s Abbey is built entirely of red brick and full of playful surprises and details for the perceptive viewer.  Behind the abbey, you will find a beautiful large garden, perfect for leisurely walks. The town of Oosterhout has a long history and has many attractions, including nine churches! The Benedictine nunnery, Our Lady Abbey and the Norbertine monastery, Saint Catharinadal, complete the Holy Triangle.

Plus d'informations

The community organizes events for young people, and offers training and retreat weekends for individuals and groups. Guests are encouraged to attend the three daily prayer services. The guest experience at Saint Paul’s is relatively unstructured and low-key, and those seeking a retreat may find it advantageous to join one of the organized programs as a centerpiece of their stay.
