Storia

The Monastery was founded in 1545 in the upper part of the city of Cortona (Arezzo), in the Poggio area, in the place where the lay company of the SS. Trinità, which ran an oratory, a church and a hospital for pilgrims.

Upstream of that complex, the monastery of St. Catherine, of the Augustinian Canonichesses, already existed since the early fifteenth century, whose building was joined in the second half of the seventeenth century to the Cistercian monastery: this also explains the current structure of the architectural complex, consisting in two large parallel buildings.
The oldest church of the monastery, which is accessed from Via della SS. Trinità, has recently been reopened and houses a renovated nineteenth-century organ.

Currently the community is made up of a group of sisters belonging to the two branches of the great Cistercian family: some coming from the Cistercian Monastery of N. S. di Valserena (Cistercian Order of the Stretta Osservanza, O.C.S.O.), and others from the Cistercian Monastery of the SS. Trinity of Cortona (Cistercian Order of the Comune Osservanza, Ocist.).
