Aperçu

Hidden in the hills on the edge of the Ardennes forest, the Chevetogne Abbey is quite remote. It is a unique abbey in Belgium, where east meets west. In an atmosphere of openness, both Roman Catholics and Orthodox join together to transcend divisions in the Christian faith. Chevetogne is an international Benedictine abbey, with ten nationalities.

Chevetogne has a central living quarters, flanked on each side by separate Byzantine and Roman Catholic church buildings. Visitors can experience their differences in one day by attending a prayer service in each. To the right of the main building is the (older) Byzantine church, where you enter a different world. The low light and walls covered with beautiful frescoes and icons, create a sacred atmosphere. The resonant Gregorian singing brings you into a meditative mood. There is also a crypt devoted to the Holy Spirit. The later-built Latin Church on the left is much larger and lighter, with a 'normal' liturgy. Here too, beautiful icons have been painted on the wall. On the floor, you will notice a labyrinth, symbolizing the search for God.
