Visión general

In the historical center of Bruges, you will find a large former ‘Beguinage’ with an old and interesting history. Today, you will be greeted by a courtyard with beautiful old white houses, and in the middle, a lawn with trees and flowers.

During the day, many tourists stroll the grounds, taking photos and delighting in the picturesque scenes. At 7:30 pm, however, the entrance gates close, and peace and quietness returns again for the residents and guests. Monasterium de Wijngaard presently houses an international community of Benedictine nuns from around the world.

Historia

Beginning in the 13th century, ‘beguines’ or emancipated laywomen, who committed themselves to a pious and celibate life, lived in this Beguinage. After the departure of the Beguines in 1927, the facility was converted into a Benedictine nunnery.

Comida y bebida

Guests are expected to follow the tradition of silence in the house, but otherwise there are few obligations. During meals, you may talk if desired. Guests are welcome to attend the six daily prayer services in the church, but it is not mandatory.

Terrenos y jardines

Behind the dining room, you will find the garden, where you can sit quietly, and for a moment of reflection, you can make yourself at home in the house chapel.

Otras instalaciones

To go to church, the nuns cross the courtyard through the throngs of tourists and visitors. This, of course, makes a popular photo opportunity! The nuns, however, do not stop and wave, and remain composed to preserve their inner peace in the midst of all the hum and bustle.

Visitors and guests can also tour the museum, Begijnhuisje (The Small House of the Beguines), at the entrance to get an impression of life in the Beguinage through the centuries. A little further down, a shop sells religious art, books, and various monastic products. Bruges is one the most popular tourist towns in Belgium and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its medieval architecture, scenic canals, and grandeur.
