Historia

Initially, the monastery served mainly as a guest house and hospice.  Destroyed by two fires in the 12th century, it was rebuilt in the 13th and later remodelled. Today the massive building has an irregular design consisting of the monastery, church and guest house. At the heart of the guest house are two cloisters, one built in the 11th, the other in the 15th century. The church, restored and enlarged in 1775, contains paintings by Vasari. Adorned by a 17th-century walnut choir and wooden furnishings, the cloister of the monastery dates to 1543. The refectory (1606) is enhanced by a wood ceiling, Lorenzo Lippi’s frescoes and a large painting by Pomarancio. The convent’s calendar is full of spiritual events which usually take place during the weekly workshops beginning at Easter and continuing until mid-September. The main events occur during Lent, Easter, Advent and Christmas. Upon request, the Convent will send a copy of the calendar of events to visitors.
