The building has been altered many times over the centuries. In 1288 a small transept was added and the apse restored; in 1377 the campanile was rebuilt. In the 16th century, a series of chapels were added along the aisles; in 1670, Rinaldi encased the choir area and created a great staircase. A century after that, Fuga added the two-story portico with benediction loggia. The obelisk in front of the apsidal façade was brought from the Basilica of Maxentius on the orders of Paul V and was erected by Sixtus V in 1587. Although the early Christian building was totally encased during the 17th and 18th centuries, the interior has maintained its original character. Important features include lavish mosaics, the Sistine Chapel and the Cappella Paolina.
Only breakfast is provided and it is always included with the lodging. Lunch and dinner can be supplied on request but only to groups.
